NITs trump the slump this hiring season

NEW DELHI: The slowdown that has gripped the economy has had no impact on the demand for top engineering talent, suggest the trends from the ongoing final placement season at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs).Students at these engineering colleges have bagged more offers and higher pay packages in the placement season that started in August, compared with the previous years. Automobile and consumer goods companies that have typically been among the top recruiters have mostly stayed away this year, but their absence has been more than offset by technology and services firms, said placement officials at various NITs.The average salary offers at NITs including Surat, Warangal and Calicut are 30% more than last year, officials said. At NITJalandhar, it is up nearly 54%. The final placement season at NITs starts ahead of that at top Indian Institutes of Technology, where it is set to begin next month. Pre-placement offers at IITs for the class of 2020 have beaten last year’s numbers by 19-24%, ET reported on Saturday.“This year, the placements are better than the last year’s. The companies are paying better and taking more students than in previous years,” said S Ghosh, the placement professor-in-charge at NIT-Jalandhar. Microsoft made the highest offer of Rs 39.02 lakh per annum on this campus this year so far. The average salary is Rs 11.63 lakh.72215772 Much of the demand is for profiles in coding, business analytics and software development. There are fewer campus visits from automobile and FMCG firms, which are hit by the slump. Regular recruiters from NITs, like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland, have not yet visited these campuses, while others like Mahindra & Mahindra have yet to confirm their dates for the visits.“The delay in the hiring process from the auto industry is being offset by an increase in demand for IT, analytics and (other) services profiles,” said Mahender Choudhary, the professor-in-charge of training and placement at Malviya NIT-Jaipur.Business, Data Analysts in DemandSalesforce and Amazon were the top recruiters at MNIT-Jaipur this season. There were also several first timers as well, such as QuadEye Security, Lowe’s, Tredence, Wissen, Incture, Nokia, PharmEasy, Cartesian Consulting, ATCS, Toshiba and IBM.Students at NIT-Calicut (Kozhikode) received 460 offers so far this year, compared with 384 at this time last year. Cisco, Arcesium, Amazon, SAP, Oracle, Qualcomm and AppDynamics were among the top recruiters. The top offer was Rs 50 lakh a year, the same as last year.At NIT-Warangal, the highest pay package was Rs 43.33 lakh this year and the average salary was Rs 12.87 lakh.“The companies are lining up for tech talent like business and data analysts, to work on artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques,” said Ch Venkaiah, the faculty in-charge of training and the placement officer at NIT-Warangal.An official at NITSurat said there was a “little bit impact” from the slowdown, but at the same time demand had increased for technology talent. As many as 440 students had got an offer by this time last year in Surat, but that number has come down to 327 this year.Microsoft, one of the top campus recruiters, especially at IITs and NITs, is hiring in big numbers this year too.
