UP govt in talks with Kanwar Sanghs to suspend yatra

After the Supreme Court asked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government to reconsider its decision to allow Kanwar Yatra amid the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, the state is in talks with Kanwar Sanghs (unions) for the cancellation of the popular procession.Sources in the UP government told ET that many senior officials have been given the responsibility of reaching out to hundreds of Kanwar sanghs across the state and counsel them to suspend the yatra. "They did it last year too, and this year too we are hopeful they will call it off," a senior official in the state government said, adding that over 90 kanwar sanghs have already been approached by the administration."The CM has made it clear to us that it cannot be a ban and then deployment of police on streets..it has to be done with the consent of the pilgrims because this is a very sensitive topic," he added. The announcement of suspension of the pilgrimage will be made by the Kanwar anghs just like last year.ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said some rules that have been fixed are that devotees from outside the state will not be allowed. At the same time, he said UP guidelines allow the assembly of up to 50 people at a time in a religious place, and the guidelines will hold for the devotees too. SSP of Bulandshahr Santosh Kumar Singh had said they have directed kanwar sanghs that those who will cook food for the devotees during the yatra, will have to go antigen testing by the health department teams. The SC said on Monday that health and the right to life is paramount, and gave the UP government time till Monday to reconsider its decision to allow Kanwar yatra. The Indian Medical Association had specifically requested UP and Uttarakhand to suspend the yatra in view of Covid-19. The Uttarakhand government has already announced its decision to suspend the yatra.
