Commemorating the ‘Shikshak Parv’, the Union Education ministry listed out the progress made, according to various parameters –– from infrastructure to enrolment –– in the past seven years in schools and higher educational institutions.Proportion of schools with hand wash facility has risen to 90% in 2020 compared to 30% in 2013; schools having girls toilets have risen from 89% in 2013 to 97% by 2020; 83% schools have electricity now, as against 55% in 2014, the government data showed.Data also pointed to the increase in teacher strength and the resultant improvement in pupil teacher ratio (PTR) –– an important indicator of greater teacher focus on children in classrooms. Lower the PTR, better the level of individualised attention to children in schools.86018724As per government data, the Pupil Per Teacher ratio has come down from 34 to 26 in primary schools between 2013 to 2020, from 23 to 18 in upper primary schools, from 30 to 18 in secondary school and 39 to 26 in higher secondary schools in the same period.The impact of the flagship ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ mission is also being felt. Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for girls rose from 39 to 52 in higher secondary schools between 2013 and 2020. For higher education also, GER for girls rose by 18% between 2015 and 2020. The number of overall students in higher education has increased from 3.45 crore students enrolled in 2015-16 to 3.85 crore by 2019-20.There has also been a major effort towards scaling up both the quality and number of premier institutions like IITs, IIMs and universities. More government and private institutes have begun to make a mark on global rankings.While six AIIMS are in operation, another 16 are in the works. From 16 IITs and 13 IIMs in 2014, the number now stands at 23 and 20 respectively. From 36,634 colleges in 2013-14, the figure stands at 42,343 in 2019-20. Several new universities have been opened up with the latest one coming up in Ladakh. Health education is another major focus area.MBBS seats have increased significantly –– from 54,348 in 2014 to 83,275 in 2020. Similarly, post graduate seats have moved up from 30,191 in 2014 to 54,275 in 2020.
