Three years after the Shiv Sena opposed the Rs 3 lakh crore Nanar refinery project, the Maharashtra government is trying to get the project back on track, albeit at a different location. However, there are doubts whether the project will take off, this time also. The Sena’s earlier stance that scuttled the Nanar project was that the locals were opposed to it –– this same reason may turn a hurdle for them this time. The Shiv Sena has, traditionally, backed off from projects if the locals were not in favour of it.The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) had identified a site for the refinery at Barsu Govar Solgaon Industrial estate in Rajapur taluk of Ratnagiri. However, a significant section of locals has opposed to the refinery being set up there. Shiv Sena MP from Ratnagiri- Sindhudurg constituency, Vinayak Raut, has admitted that there was opposition to the project.“There are several people who support the project and an equal number of people who are opposed to it. Both groups have met and given representations to me, airing their views. I would be meeting the chief minister after Ganesh Utsav and present both the views,” Raut told ET. He denied that the MIDC had identified Rajapur for the project. The Sena had, in the past opposed big-ticket projects, especially in Konkan, like the 9,900 MW nuclear power Jaitapur power project in Ratnagiri. Earlier this year, the state also promised fishermen, who opposed to the Rs 65,000-cr Wadhwan port projects, that the state would not let the project take off if they were opposed to it. When the BJP- Sena government was in power, the latter forced the BJP to backtrack on the Nanar refinery project after some villagers opposed the project. However, there is concern in the industry department over the protests over the projects and its impact on the state.
